Lessons Learned

Substitute teachers shared twelve lessons that they have learned while substitute teaching. These suggestions were identified as the most important learning experiences.

  1. Being a professional substitute teacher helped in getting jobs.
  2. Arrive at least 20 minutes early.
  3. It’s important to have a sense of humor and don’t take yourself too seriously.
  4. Substitute teachers should never judge how a student will behave based on looks. Every student deserves a clean slate.
  5. Set expectations early in the class period.
  6. Enjoy the students, and let them enjoy you. They can be incredible people, and it’s our job to foster an environment where each person can excel.
  7. Get to know the teacher next door.
  8. Get to know the principal or vice principal.
  9. Follow the lesson plan.
  10. It’s okay to be amazed by students.
  11. Take time to reflect each day and improve the areas of your teaching that may be weak.
  12. Leave a detailed report at the end of each day.

Each of these lessons are very profound and I am grateful to all who participated. What lessons have you learned from substitute teaching?
