Being Unreasonable

Marketing guru Seth Godin said:

It’s unreasonable for teachers to expect that we can enable disadvantaged inner city kids to do well in high school. Fortunately, the world is filled with unreasonable people.

I found this idea that people are (thankfully) doing unreasonable things every day, so inspiring! I want to add to his list with unreasonable things I’ve seen substitute teachers do.

  1. It’s unreasonable that substitute teachers have activities planned and prepared for the students in case the lesson plans end early.
  2. It’s unreasonable to ask a substitute teacher to enjoy the challenge of not knowing students’ names and thinking of ways to learn them.
  3. It’s unreasonable to ask substitute teachers to do a great job educating students while the permanent teacher is away.

Fortunately, the world is filled with unreasonable people. Unfortunately, you need to compete with them. – Seth Godin

Are you an unreasonable substitute teacher? What makes you unreasonable? What do you do to give? What do you do to keep happy all school year long?

Thank you to all of you unreasonable substitute teachers for setting the bar of expectation so high!!
