Self-Evaluation Checklist

There is tremendous value in reflecting on your teaching. It is a time to take stock and alter your techniques for the better. Sometimes we are lucky enough to have a third party observe us and offer objective input. If we don’t have that opportunity, however, we always have the option to evaluate ourselves. Here is a checklist to help you rate yourself by identifying your strengths (S) and the areas you would like to improve (I).

S/I   Visually scans all students frequently and intervenes immediately when expectations are not being met

S/I  Gives verbal warnings/choices of impending consequences and follows through

S/I  Uses hand and facial gestures to signal privileges as approval and disapproval

S/I  Uses concrete reinforcements and incentives

S/I  Gives 8 positive interactions for every 1 negative interaction

S/I  Uses praise, smiles, and other forms of reinforcement frequently and appropriately

S/I  Uses private conferences to address consequential behavior

S/I  Gives specific directions for transitions, monitors closely, and gives frequent feedback

S/I  Makes emotional connections with students

S/I  Shows and requires respect with students

S/I  Makes expectations for social behavior explicit

S/I  Uses positive social role models and role playing

S/I  Has materials organized and ready for quick implementation

S/I  Provides help to students efficiently

S/I  Is enthusiastic when introducing the lesson

S/I  Limits the length of lectures and seat work activities when possible

S/I  Brings varied and challenging lessons in the case that the teacher doesn’t provide one

S/I  Can adapt the lesson plan if necessary to fit into time constraints or extenuating circumstances

Consider your responses on this checklist and choose one or two areas to work on each week. Best of luck to you on your journey toward a productive classroom where both you and your students thrive!
