Uses for a KWL Chart

A KWL Chart is an excellent graphic organizer that is extremely flexible and can be used in a wide variety of grade levels. KWL Charts help students to access prior knowledge, identify questions they have, and review new information learned.

Implementing a KWL chart is quite simple. You can either have each student work on them individually or you can fill out one chart as a whole class.

For a KWL chart, a piece of paper is divided into thirds like a letter. Title the first section with a K which stands for “What Do You Know?” The second section is titled with a W which stands for “What Do You Want to Know?” And the last section is titled with an L which stands for “What Have you Learned?”

After introducing the topic at hand, the teacher then asks students to fill out the first two sections of the chart. Then a learning activity is implemented. At the end of the learning activity, as a review, the final column is completed.

I hope this quick tip is helpful for you. Thanks for all you do!
